Wolters Kluwer formed under its present name in 1987 when Kluwer Publishers merged with Wolters Samson as a defensive move against an attempted hostile takeover of Kluwer Publishers by Elsevier.¹ In 2003 Wolters Kluwer sold Kluwer Academic Publishers to two private equity funds who shortly after merged it with BertelsmannSpringer to form Springer Science+Business Media.²

Legal Education

Wolters Kluwer maintains an entire business practice devoted to legal education.¹⁷ That business has grown over the years through various acquisitions. These included the acquistion in 2001 of Emanuel Law Outlines ¹⁸ ¹⁹ followed in 2002 by the aquisition of Casenotes, a Santa Monica legal studies publishing house. ²⁰ These businesses continue to form an integral part of the student legal study aids available from Wolters Kluwer. ²¹. The content from these study aids has been integrated into a software tool called study desk that is available online. ²² ²³

Community Work
