July 4 - In boxing's 'first' match of the century, Jack Johnson knocks out the great white hope James J. Jeffries in round15 to retain his heavyweight title.

Victorian Football League - Collingwood wins the 14th VFL Premiership (Collingwood 9.7 (61) d Carlton 6.11 (47))

Newtown Jets drew with South Sydney Rabbitohs 4-4 in the final, securing the title by its superior record during the season (23 competition points to 22)
Newcastle Rebels, who played in the New South Wales Rugby League premiership 1908-1909, left when a local Newcastle competitor was formed, replaced by Annandale

January 5 - The National Hockey Association (NHA) starts its inaugural season.
January 15 - The Canadian Hockey Association disbands. Ottawa and Montreal Shamrocks join the NHA.
March 15 - Montreal Wanderers win the NHA championship and the Stanley Cup. The club then defeats the Berlin Union Jacks in a challenge. It is the fifth season in a row that the Wanderers have won the Cup outright or won a Cup challenge.
March - The Toronto St. Michael's Majors win the Allan Cup.
December - The NHA loses Cobalt and Haileybury teams, gains a Quebec team. The Les Canadiens are taken over by George Kennedy's Club Athletique Canadien after threatening legal action.
